I've wanted to create a website for a long time, but could never decide what to show. What you see here is a start. I have a bunch of interests and hobbies (likely too many), that includes photography. However, like many amateurs, my photo interest tends to be more focused on the gear rather than the art and I'm afraid my images tend to reflect that. In any case, I hope you enjoy some of the photos here. I've also made some half-hearted attempts at video and a few samples of that effort are here as well.
For my professional life, I was a project manager for genomic cancer research. The group I was associated with was based in Sioux Falls, with associates in La Jolla and Montreal. The team’s work centered around breast cancer and genomic studies of the individualization of breast cancer treatment. In brief, cancer is not a unitary disease and as each individual is different from another, so is their cancer. The research was focussed on trying to identify the specific genetic characteristics of each person's cancer so as to guide personalized treatment options that would have the best outcome. Unconnected but related, I also served as an Editorial Assistant with the British Journal of Cancer, based in London UK, covering the Translational Therapeutics subsection for thirteen years.
This has been quite the journey as I started my professional career working as a psychologist, teaching and conducting research in behaviourial neurobiology, specializing in addiction. This led to work as a Clinical Psychologist for almost 20 years. I left the field in the early 2000s and came to cancer work via a small pharmaceutical oncology drug development company.
...and this rather profound transition came about because, at the time, I happened to bowl 10 pins. A true story and a somewhat longish one that maybe I'll write about sometime...
